Contemporary Art meets electronic Music
A young artist from Dresden who studied painting at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig (HGB) from 1998 to 2003 under Arno Rink (father of the New Leipzig School) is collaborating in an exceptional and enthralling relationship with one of the most successful acts in electronic music.
Ekkehard Tischendorf meets Digitalism...!
Ekkehard Tischendorf, born 1976, was strongly influenced by electronic music in his youth, and even at 16 years old, along with a friend, began playing his favourite music as DJ at the most diverse events. Over time Tischendorf felt that his dealings with music had become too commercial, and his interest in art was growing ever stronger. Tischendorf thus decided to give in to this impulse and dedicate himself fully to art.
Since 2005 Tischendorf has been represented by the Galerie Levy, Hamburg.
Through his collaboration with the Galerie Levy, Tischendorf met Alexander Levy, son of Gallerist Thomas Levy, who like Tischendorf could not pull himself away from electronic music and had previously acted as DJ at events.
Following a short conversation about their shared passion, Alexander Levy raved about two lads from Hamburg who, in his opinion, had taken electronic music to a new dimension. Levy had met one of the pair some time ago in a record store where he always browsed looking for new songs (Underground Solution – the same record store in which Isi and Jence had met.) Because of this meeting he followed the careers of the two protagonists of Digitalism with particular interest.
Alexander Levy gave Tischendorf the new album by Digitalism to listen to. One day later, Tischendorf called him and also raved about this album with its ethereal, explosive, and sometimes melancholic moods. Tischendorf had listened to the album while working on a painting, and was immediately inspired by the music.
Without further ado, Alexander Levy arranged for the musical artists and the painter to meet at a performance by Digitalism in Dresden, and they immediately discovered their common wavelength – with the result that Ekkehard Tischendorf, and Isi and Jence, decided together to produce a very personal work around Digitalism. Jence: “It’s incredibly exciting that an artist is dealing with our music and with us as people.”
Perhaps this is one of the most important qualities of art: to know no bounds and to bring people together! This truth has been impressively championed worldwide this year by the Hamburg Electro-Rock duo Digitalism in the performances for their debut album “Idealism.” Whether in Japan, the USA, England, or Australia – they are electronically rocking everywhere. In November and December Isi and Jence finally brought their energetic live spectacle to German clubs once again. Thereby they were also be packing a wonderful “revelation.”
The idea of presenting the results of their intercultural dialog directly in the club has been met on all sides with enthusiasm. The time has now come. In their first live show in Hamburg on November 23, the results of an unusual artistic symbiosis of music and painting celebrated its premiere in the public arena! The artwork DUO was solemnly unveiled in the course of the show!
