lives and works in Kadern

Jürgen Brodwolf (b. 1932) is actually a drawing artist and lithographer, which is why he displays such impressive sureness in his work. Over the course of time he perfected his drawing skills and worked as a restorer and glass painter before expressing himself through his sculptural talents. In 1976 Brodwolf accepted an appointment at the Fachhochschule für Gestaltung in Pforzheim, and in 1982 at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart. In addition to numerous exhibitions he also participated in Documenta 6 in 1977, and the Venice Biennale of 1982.

Galerie Levy dedicated an exhibition to Jürgen Brodwolf in 2007 on the occasion of his seventy-fifth birthday. An important contribution to this museal exhibition was the multi-series cycle Das letzte Bildnis der Meret Oppenheim [The Last Portrait of Meret Oppenheim], produced between 1992 and 2006. Brodwolf based this work on a portrait of Meret Oppenheim by the Swiss photographer Christian Vogt. This body of work fit well with his media-spanning œuvre, driven by a stringent leitmotif. In her catalogue article for this exhibition Belinda Grace Gardner wrote:
“Jürgen Brodwolf has repeatedly focussed his interest on characters and occurrences in history that fascinated or left a lasting impression upon him. He has developed an abstracted and condensed repertoire of graphical and sculptural figures with which – since the discovery of the tube-figures in 1959 - he has been acting out the great questions of the conditio humana as if on a living stage. Simultaneously he has been carrying out a creative-alchemistic form of reminiscence and cultural reflection using the examples of protagonists subjectively selected from art, literature, politics, and science. Particularly in the form of edited or self-produced books, presented individually or in extensive library and archive installations, he has set himself on the trail of people such as Albert Einstein, Eleonora Duse, Rosa Luxemburg, Franz Kafka, and many more. Monographs and literary works also serve as starting materials for him to overpaint and for various print-making techniques. He then employs the latter in newly composed books, which are based – like in the cycle The Last Portrait of Meret Oppenheim – on individual motifs reproduced using nitro or asphalt printing compounds.”
