Alexander Raymond (b. 1976) lives and works in Hamburg. One gazes past cliffs and a steep coastline across a great open expanse of ocean. Above this extends a light blue and sometimes also deep red sky, partially obscured by majestically towering cloud formations. Yet also: trees garishly illuminated by streetlamps, their foliage shimmering a strange off-coloured yellow, like a sallow glow before gloomy blocks of buildings. With both types of scene Alexander Raymond shows deserted landscapes, which depending on subject and mood nonetheless reveal incredible variation. Here the city at night, and there, glittering nature, as bright as day. Differences in the painterly execution also catch one’s eye. There are clear-coloured contours on the one hand, with a density of form almost like Léger's, and gloomy mixed light on the other, with shadowy but nonetheless strong colour impressions, combined into something realistically insubstantial. Raymond sometimes integrates figuration into this spectrum. He exhibits people in stage-like and often unreal scenes, or depicts them with portrait-like conciseness, sometimes also showing them in absurdly deformed (self)-portraits. These are sometimes only prototypes, but they often populate the pictorial space like ghosts, airily, and with dreamlike overlapping, thus engendering multi-layered fields of imagination and memory. All this, however, which from this first rough description might seem disparate and stylistically contradictory, nonetheless originates unmistakably from one hand. What they have in common, perhaps, is a very unique form of realism, for which Raymond finds new methods again and again in various series and phases of work. A basic precept of this realism is that, as surreal as they sometimes appear, he always develops his motifs based on something seen, thus initially working directly from the visual – he sketches, watercolours, or paints small-format oil studies.
