LEVY gallery is delighted to honor the abstract oeuvre of Werner Berges (*1941 Cloppenburg; †2017 Schallstadt in the upcoming exhibition FOR A CHANGE. The artist is known as a pioneer of German Pop Art of the 1960s and 70s attributed to his infinite silhouetted multiplications of the female body. An essentially more dominant position in his oeuvre occupy his rather abstract works of the 1970s until 2000s which up until now did not gain center stage. The exhibition presents as much as 30 compositions of this vital period of works entering an abstract interplay between compression and dissolution of lines, planar patches, forms and color gradients. They challenge aesthetic certainties whilst the figures disintegrate into filigree fragments or appear to dissolve almost entirely into sketchy structures. The accompanying catalogue provides further insight into this part of his oeuvre on the basis of about 100 works. His interweaving of figuration and abstraction calls for a more comprehensive evaluation of Berges’s artistic work.
In conjunction with the exhibition a catalogue at Kerber Publishers with essays by Dr. Belinda Grace Gardner and Dr. Anna Heinze as well as two collector’s editions, Auch mal so and Middlesex: Auch Affentheater, edition: each 100 + 10 H.C., numbered and signed by estate stamp, will be published.
